| The Book of Women's Firsts: Breakthrough Achievements of Almost 1,000 American Women by Phyllis J. Read and Bernard Witlieb. This fascinating book provides snippets on many "firsts" in American history. From the momentous to the obscure this book provides them all---the founder of the Red Cross to the first American girl scout. The book takes a dictionary-encyclopedia format, listing by the woman's name. My only quibble is the lack of references. I would prefer to have seen acknowledgement of major sources on at least the more well known ladies--especially to encourage younger readers to explore these interesting ladies more.
