10 Lies the Church Tells Women by J. Lee Grady. Creation House, 2000.
Grady explores 10 assumptions made by the church that affect women. "Lies" he explores include, "A woman should view her husband as the 'priest of her home'," "A man needs to 'cover' a woman in her ministry activities" and "Women shouldn't work outside the home". He also addresses the more common issues such as women in leadership and submission. Grady's style is informal and direct. On the issues of women in leadership and marriage he often repeats well known arguments. As a result, some sections seem a bit dated. On the topics of covering, priesthood, work outside the home and the place of women in historic thought Grady's skill and knowledge are more evident. He provides examples of various teachings, then compares those teachings to Scripture. As he demonstrates what we think often falls well short of the Scriptural bar. Despite the weaknesses of repetition in a few chapters, this is an informative book. Grady's method of presenting a teaching, then comparing it to Scripture will be useful for those new to the topic. Academics and researchers may be a bit disappointed.
