Sex Differences in Violent Victimization by Diane Craven, PhD:
  • 62% of all female victims of non-fatal violence were attacked by someone they knew compared with 37% of all male victims.
  • Women were more likely to be victimized in a private place (in their homes or the homes of family or friends), while men were more likely to be victimized in public locations.
  • 40% of all sexual assaults on women were committed by friends or acquaintances, while 24% were committed by spouses.
  • 31% of all homicides of women were committed by an intimate, compared with 3% of male homicides.
  • 17.2% of all homicides of women were committed by their spouses, compared with 2% of male homicides.
  • 12am-6pm saw the highest percentage of violent incidents against women--31%.

  • 85% of intimate partner violence victims between 1992-1996 were women.

  • In a survey 25% of 8-9th grade girls had been victims of non-sexual dating violence.

  • 32% of college students reported non-sexual dating violence.
  • In surveys, an equal number of male and female high and college students report inflicting violence. However, female students were more likely to reporting doing so in self defense.
