October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Many of us believe that Domestic Violence only happens to other people--in other cities and in other churches. In reality, however, domestic violence occurs in our own cities, our own churches and our own families. A woman is far more likely to be murdered by her husband or boyfriend than she is to be murdered by some thug on the street. The next time you go shopping look around, look at 12 different women...then consider that half of all women will experience intimate partner violence. This means 6 of the twelve women you watched have or will be the victims of violence by their partner. Again, on your next trip to the store, look at three women. One in three women are sexually assaulted in their lifetime. One of three women you watch will have or has been sexually assaulted. Children are molested by parents far more often than by perverts lingering in the school yards. Some studies suggest members of "good Christian" families are even more at risk of domestic violence than non-Christians.
