| Katharine Marjory, Duchess of Atholl The Duchess had a remarkable career. Her accomplishments ranged from academic to political. She edited the Military History of Perthshire, which was published in 1908. By 1923 she had redirected her energy towards the political arena. She ran for Parliament for the Conservative Party, and won. Her focus on education and work for the underprivileged, gained her an appointment on the cabinet in 1924. In the 1930s her concerns for welfare lead to concerns about the developing fascism in Germany. To publicize the her concerns about the movement, she translated and published Mein Kampf. She eventually resigned her seat in 1938 in protest over the Munich Agreement. Top In 1969 she became the first single woman sent as a missionary to Japan. She served the Reformed Church. She founded Ferris Seminary (now Ferris Girls' School) on June 1, 1975. She later edited "Glad Tidings" a monthly magazine. |
