Ovington, Mary White
At the turn of the 20th century, Ovington began to study the living conditions of African Americans in New York. What she found horrified her. For four years she studied to understand the plight of people discriminated against in the market place, house in substandard conditions and, often, in peril of their very lives. By 1909 she began to network with like-minded people. That small group became the NAACP in 1910. She described that beginning in "How the NAACP Began".
